The Blackborough Meat Company is a small family owned, and run business straight from our 50 acre farm high in the Blackdown Hills. The Blackdown Hills is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with views of Exmoor, Dartmoor and the Quantocks.
We started our business 2 years ago as a smallholding hobby which soon snowballed!
We bought 25 acres 2 years ago in order to use the buildings. We then decided we ought to get something to eat the grass down - in came the sheep! The sheep gave birth - in came the lambs! The lambs grew but the market prices didn't, so we then decided to sell them privately - in came the business!
August 2005 we bought our first Oxford Sandy and Black Pig from the British Pig Association Rare Breed sale - tadneys lady 10 or better known as "Marmalade". We loved the temperment, colour and size of marmalade and soon couldn't wait to breed from her, and eventuallly taste the meat that every other pig breeder had raved about.
In May 2006 we bought a further 25 acres and more Oxford Sandy and Black Sows and our own very happy boar Alexander. Pigs were also not making good money at the markets and our lamb customers then wanted to try our pork so the pork boxes then began to be sold.
We currently own 8 registered pedigree breeding Oxford Sandy and Black sows which are rare breed pigs (there are only 150 registered breeding sows in the country), and have a total of over 78 piglets. During the summer most of our piglets and pigs enjoy foraging around one of our 2 acre woods - when they don't sneek under the fencing, which the did often!! Our intention in the next year is to get as many outside as possible.
Along side the pigs, we also have 45 sheep, 20 lambs, 20 quail, 33 free range chicken and one cat named spotty!
Our lambs graze high upon the blackdown hills and have the added help of some creep feed to assist their wellbeing during the cold and wet weather and to maintain their standard of meat.
So how good does it taste? What started as a very small venture has grown and grown with past customers coming back for more, time and time again and spreading the word to friends and strangers!, this can only speak for itself.
Both our pork and lamb is left to mature at its own pace, therefore the meat and animals are not pushed and the flavour speaks for itself, being both succulent and tasty. If you are no good at getting crackling on your pork joint, you have to try our pork you cannot fail even without salt!
Why buy rare breed/ pedigree pork? Rare`Breed/Pedigree Pork Producers keep native British breeds in small herds. Most breeding sows live outside for much of the year and when they are bought inside they are given plenty of space to run around and LOTS of straw.
Grown more slowly, they produce pork with a traditional flavour well worth waiting for, and by buying rare breed/pedigree pork you are ensuring the future survival of that breed for generations to come.
Our Plans for the future We have only owned the land for 2 half years and in that time have achieved a lot. All of our fields have been fenced to high standards, some hedges laid, and new wooden gateways installed all preventing the un-necessary chasing of sheep and lambs every weekend!
Our next job is to finish fencing the woodlands in order for more of the pigs to get out into the countryside to gorge themselves silly and face the elements. We have a 2 acre woodland already fenced with some pigs and piglets in it, another 1/4 acre with marmalade in it and another woodland to finish fencing.
Thank you for spending the time to get to know us. We hope it has encouraged you to try our meats in the knowledge that we care how it gets to your plate and ultimately how it tastes.
